Doe's your puppy or dog chew? Chances are it does. In this article you will learn 5 tips I use to stop puppies chewing. You'll never have to worry about your favourite pair of running shoes again!

Step 1 is to get you dog to a vet for a full check up. Make sure your dog is healthy and that there are no medical illnesses giving her the need to chew.

Chewing is natural, but you need to decide what is acceptable and what isn't. Puppies chew as a form of learning (just like human babies) so it shouldn't be banned totally. Apart from just protecting your house, you also need to teach dogs what they can't chew because of dangers in chewing - such as electric cables etc.

The easiest way to teach your dog the items that can and can't be chewed is by using the "No" command. Use it anytime your dog starts to chew on something that it shouldn't. After telling your dog "No", remove the item it was chewing. Should your dog resist giving you the item, squirt a little water in its face and then take the item.

As you approach the dog to remove the item it's chewing, do it in a slow controlled manner. If you move too quickly your dog may get the wrong idea and thing you are playing. If the object is fixed, or large, try spraying some bitter apple chew deterrent to stop the chewing.

You shouldn't be attempting to stop chewing entirely as it is healthy, try to redirect your dogs chewing to items that can be chewed on such as chew toys for example.

Some puppies and dogs may resist when you try to teach them not to chew. If this is the case, be cautious as your dog may turn aggressive on you.

Use the tips mentioned above to train your dog what can and can't be chewed. In time and with a little persistence your dog will know exactly what she should and shouldn't be chewing.
